Mami Wata x BCUC
Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness (BCUC) are on fire - touring Europe, the US and winning the highly prestigious Womex 23 Artist Award!
Based in Soweto, Johannesburg, BCUC don’t limit themselves to the music of any single culture. They epitomise the plurality of Southern Africa: their music reflects all the people around them, and they sing in all eleven of Mzansi’s official languages.
Their ‘Afro Psychedelic Future Pop’ is as exciting as the continent. Live, they are a powerful experience. This explosive energy takes influence from hip-hop, rock, funk, gospel and Afrobeat, but also indigenous spiritual practices and magic.
We’ve partnered with the band since we launched Mami Wata in 2017, their track Woza was on our first film of the same name, they also lifted the roof at our Vans X Mami Wata launch event in Cape Town in March this year.
Along the way, we’ve had the opportunity to create merchandise for their international tours. This band tours! Most recently the Soweto based outfit played 54 shows in 15 countries around Europe.
And they just won the Womex 23 Artist Award! As Womex say: "BCUC represents the roots, trunk and branches of South African traditional music. This is cultural preservation in a way that isn’t frozen in time like a museum, but in a way that is living and breathing and growing and dancing. For their dedication to their music, their people and their country; for embodying the strength, unity and progress of their band name; and for their sheer ability to raise any roof, it is with pleasure that BCUC are the recipients of the WOMEX 23 Artist Award.” They are being presented the award at this World Wide Music Industry event in Spain at the end of October.
What about the USA, we hear you say? Well, America - they are on their way! In November they are touring the USA for the first time. We’ll be hustling some plans with them (Win tickets / fresh merch) to support their US tour.
